Master of Arts Program in Social Science (Women and Gender Studies Track)
Philosophy of this program is an integration of theories and social sciences knowledge of different disciplines such as geography, sociology, anthropology as gained from experiences in knowledge construction and research in order to analyze complexities and problems of development process resulting from changes in state policies, laws, trade and investment, production systems, natural resource uses, cultures and health problems particularly in upper Southeast Asia Region.
Such changes have produced impacts towards different groups of people i.e. local and ethnic people. Knowledge gained will enable them to adapt to changes, to seek for development alternatives that allow them to participate in decision making and policy formulation process, and to develop their potential to adapt to future changes.
The curriculum gives emphasis on social sciences dimension in the study of development process and on livelihood security of different groups of people through four major approaches as follows:
Analysis on ethnic potentials and inter -ethnic relations among ethnic groups of social and cultural differences, and their degree of rights to participate in sustainable natural resource management, cultural pluralism & pluralistic society and conflicts resolution resulting from ethnic bias.
Regionalization and Transnationalism
An analysis on changes and impacts from development interconnecting with regionalization process via several forms such as networks of ecology, energy, trades, communications, including transnational relations exacerbated by globalization process. Emphasis is given to diversity of relations at different levels and complexities •of livelihood of different groups of people in several dimensions.
Women and Gender Studies
An analysis on changes in development process in disciplinary field of studies, incorporating humanities, social sciences, sciences and several others, while putting gender relations and feminism dimensions into an analysis.
An analysis on health issues in an aspect of social sciences through participatory holistic approach in order to better understanding and promote health and well-being issues under the context of social and ecological interactive.
To produce graduates with following qualifications
- To be capable of understanding modes of thinking and social methodology science research in a holistic manner which will encourage the study of development process in well-round aspect and in response to changing social and ecological contexts at the regional and international levels.
- To understand complexities of development process and develop analytical skills in scrutinizing development problems and impacts in various dimensions.
- To be capable of synthesize and apply knowledge to practices in the field by giving emphasis on local knowledge and potentials of local groups.
- To have potential to conduct social science field research at both local and regional levels, as well as understanding social complexities and social differentiation in order to produce new body of knowledge and offer development alternatives based on equity and ecological sustainability.
